The 4th of July is usually filled with festivities, yummy snacks, games, fireworks, and tons of family fun! And while celebrating among adults is one thing, we have a few tips and tricks when it comes to marking this holiday with the little ones.
Here are our top tips for planning a kid-friendly July 4th celebration:
Sun Safety – The beginning of July often means sunny rays and higher temperatures, so we recommend being heat-ready! If you’re spending most of the day outdoors, be sure to grab sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and cool drinks to stay hydrated.
Quiet Time – Upbeat music, excited conversation, and loud fireworks can all be a lot to take in if you’re very young, which is why we suggest bringing along a pair of kid-sized, noise-cancelling headphones to the party. That way both little ones and adults can comfortably enjoy the day!
(Other) Fireworks – Fireworks, especially if observed up-close, can become a safety hazard for kiddos. Even mini fireworks such as sparklers can cause boo-boos if not handled properly! To make things risk-free, go for firework alternatives such as light-up balloons, glow sticks, bubbles, or confetti.
Kid-Friendly Snacks – Put the fun into food with colorful snacks for kids! Some suggestions include (but are not limited to): fruity skewers with blueberries, strawberries and bananas (to echo the U.S. flag!), star-shaped cookies or sandwiches, mini burgers and hot dogs, and red or blue smoothies. Yum!
Crafty Decorations – As you set up your 4th of July party, involve kids in the decorating process and create thematic crafts! Bust out all things red, white, and blue and get creative. Fill jars with 3 layers of colorful sand, put together a wreath for your door, paint the U.S. flag on paper plates, and so much more!
Family Activities – Whether you’re celebrating as a family or having a larger (safe) gathering, kid-friendly activities are key. Go for classic outdoor games such as hopscotch, jump rope, ring toss, or freeze tag. And when the sun starts going down, set up a projector for a movie under the stars or camp out in your backyard and eat yummy s’mores.
Educational Fun – The 4th of July marks a key moment in American history and can make for a great learning opportunity. Take a moment during the day to sit with kiddos and explain the significance of the day to them. You could even opt for a kid-friendly movie or book!
